Anticipatory guidance

GENERAL HEALTH All
  • Hygiene:
    • Bathe 2-3\week
    • Use warm water (always check temp) and mild\fragrance-free soap
    • Change diapers frequently to prevent diaper rash
  • Fever:
    • Measure w\ thermometer
    • Don’t give any medications (cough and cold)
    • If > 38°c -> seek medical help
>6mo
  • Dental care
    • Brush teeth w\ plain water and soft brush
    • Visit the dentist by 12 months or after first tooth
FEEDING All
  • Breast feeding
    • Exclusive breastfeeding in the first 4-6 mo is ideal
    • 8-12 feedings\24 hrs
    • Continue prenatal vitamins
    • Avoid alcohol
  • If bottle-fed:
    • Iron fortified formula
    • Prepared and stored safely (check temperature before feeding)
    • Feed 60g\3-4 hrs (2 mo), 100g 5 bottle\day (4 mo)
    • Hold baby in semi-upright position
    • Don’t use anything to prop the bottle (like a pillow), hold it yourself
  • Vitamin D supplementation
  • Don’t introduce any food till the age of 6 mo
  • Don’t give honey till the age of 12 mo

  • Start introducing food:
    • 2-3 new foods\wk w\ few days in between to allow time to identify reaction
    • Iron-enriched cereal, pureed veg, fruits, meat\meat alternatives
    • Start egg yolk, yoghurt, cheese at the age of 9 mo
    • Don’t give honey till the age of 12 mo
    • Avoid juice (water is preferred), added salts and sugars
SLEEP All
  • Need to sleep for 16 hrs\day
  • Supine
  • Firm mattress
  • Keep rails\sides up to prevent falls
  • Have baby sleep in your room, but in own crib
  • No bottles in bed
>6mo
  • Sleep for <16 hrs\day
  • 2-3 naps\day
  • Establish a sleep routine
BEHAVIOR <2mo
  • Normal crying up to 3 hr\day
  • Cry for multiple reasons not only hunger
  • Never shake the baby
TEETHING >6mo
  • Your baby might begin teething -> salivates and chews a lot
  • Teething ring can help
SAFETY

 

All
  • Car:
    • Use car seat and follow instructions for proper use, back seat, rear-facing until 1 year AND 20 pounds
    • Always wear seat belt
    • Never drive under the influence
    • Never leave the baby alone in the car
  • Never leave your baby unattended
  • Never shake your baby
  • Provide toys appropriate for your baby’s age
  • Siblings and jealousy
  • Never smoke in the house\car\near the baby
  • Keep plastic bags, small objects, cleaning products, medication out of reach
  • Discourage the use of pacifiers
  • Don’t carry hot liquids while carrying baby
>6mo
  • Discourage the of use baby walkers
  • Install stair gates
  • Cover electrical outlets
  • Fences around pools
  • Caution w\ whole grapes, nuts, raw carrots due to choking hazard
  • Check for sources of lead in home
